Corporate Partnerships
Engaging female students of all ages in math, science, and technology is one of the most important factors in creating tomorrow\’s workforce. Similarly, supporting the development of female engineering professionals fosters diversity in today\’s workforce. With these shared goals in mind, we would like to encourage your company to partner with the Philadelphia section of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE).
As a national nonprofit educational and service organization, SWE has supported women in engineering for over 50 years. SWE\’s mission is to stimulate women to achieve their full potential in careers as engineers and leaders, to expand the image of the engineering profession as a positive force in improving the quality of life, and to demonstrate the value of diversity. To that end, the Philadelphia section has planned several exciting events both for the professional development of our members, as well as for student outreach. Your sponsorship will go a long way in supporting these activities.
Additionally, partnering with SWE will allow you to:
- Showcase your organization as a diversity advocate
- Further your community outreach efforts
- Network with a pool of skilled, local engineering professionals
- Reach engineering students from area colleges and universities such as Drexel, Upenn, Widener, Villanova, and others.
- Support the retention and advancement of women engineers in your organization
- Receive acknowledgement on our website and in the section newsletter
There are plenty of ways to partner with SWE. Click on the links below for more information on each of these options:
Donate Funds for the Annual Scholarship Program
The Scholarship Program awards $1,000 each to selected female applicants who are enrolled in an accredited engineering program at a college or university within our section boundaries. The criteria for selection are excellence in science/math/engineering activities, teamwork, leadership, scholarship, and an application essay. This is a ten-year tradition of providing financial assistance to women studying engineering and computer science. We rely largely on the support of local manufacturing, engineering, and technology companies such as yours.
Section and Scholarship funds are solicited annually from individuals, corporations, and foundations. Donations are tax deductible under U.S. Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3). Donors have the option of having their donation placed in the Dorothy Hoffman Memorial Endowment Fund or distributed through SWE-Philadelphia at this time. All money donated for scholarships goes to the recipients; administrative costs are paid by the Section, and all staff are volunteers. Donors of $1,000 or multiples thereof will have the scholarship(s) named for them and be invited to present the scholarship(s) (if designated for immediate distribution) at our Awards Banquet to be held in April 2008.

Sponsor the SWE-Widener University Engineering Girls Camp
This year's joint SWE-Widener University Engineering Girls Camp will be held in February 2008. Last year, 150 high school girls from schools in southeastern PA, DE, NJ, and MD participated in this program which provides interaction with engineering professionals, professors, and undergraduate and graduate students during the course of hands-on laboratory workshops in various engineering fields. A concurrent Parents Program provides information on what parents can expect should their daughter decide to study engineering and some of the avenues available to finance an engineering education. Our Girls Camp program has received accolades from both parents and students since its inception in February 2000. Typically, 80-90% of participants state that the Girls Camp increased their interest in engineering as a career option.

Host a Section Meeting
SWE-Philadelphia holds meetings for professional members approximately once a month. Typically a speaker will present on a technical or professional development topic. Past examples include:
- Obtaining a Professional Engineer (P.E.) License
- “The Science Behind Personal Care Products” - presented by a specialty chemicals company
- “Effective Networking” – presented by the president and CEO of an IT firm
- “Investment Strategies for Women” – presented by a financial consultant
- And many others
Area companies have provided speakers, facilities, and refreshments for these meetings. While the focus should be on a topic of general interest to our membership, hosting a section meeting can also allow your organization to network with our members for possible recruitment. Likewise, it gives our members a chance to learn more about local employers.
If you would like to host a meeting, please contact the Vice President of Professional Development, at
profdev@philaswe.org.

Lead a Tour of Your Facility
Tours of local manufacturing facilities or community sites like ballparks, wastewater treatment plants, etc. offer our members a behind-the-scenes look at the application of engineering and technology in various fields and industries. A facility tour may be more technical than a presentation at a section meeting, but keep in mind that SWE members come from virtually all engineering disciplines and a broad range of industries.
If you would like to host a meeting, please contact the Vice President of Professional Development, at
profdev@philaswe.org.
