The Philadelphia Section has hosted many Regional Conferences, but never a National Conference. In 1998, Philadelphia, along with the Lehigh Valley and New Jersey Sections, submitted a proposal to host the 2004 National Conference. In 2002, when the Society changed the conference dates from June to October, the Philadelphia Convention Center was fully booked, there was no other venue in Philadelphia large enough to hold the conference, so we lost the bid. The Section also placed a bid for the 2000 National Conference, but lost to the Baltimore-Washington Section.
This was the first SWE conference April 2-3, 1949 held at Drexel Institute of Technology with a theme of: Let's Plot Women's Progress in Engineering. This conference founded a regional SWE organization.

The Philadelphia Section newsletter was started in 1949 under the name, NO NAME. After two issues, the newsletter was named SLIP STICK SALLY by Ruth Kern. In 1950, after the National organization was founded and was deemed a graduate organization, SLIP STICK SALLY had to graduate as well. The title of the newsletter was changed to "The Outlook" and still remains the name of the newsletter today. The above logo was designed by Ruby Singleton Langford. In 1973, the "Outlook" was resurrected after a decade of inactivity.
