Tracie Spangler (until recently I was Saunders, got married in August)

Profession/Job Title: Biochemical Engineer

Employer: Merck

Work Description: I do process development for fermentation and cell culture processes. The projects I work on deal with cells/bacteria/yeast that secrete therapeutic proteins or molecules that are used as parts of therapies and vaccines for things like cancer, childhood diseases, etc. Basically, I work to scale up and improve processes from small scale (flasks) to a point where the process can be transferred to manufacturing (large reactors).

College/University: Northeastern University. I just started a master's program part time at Lehigh University

Years as a SWE member: 5 years as an undergrad, this is my 2nd year as a professional.

Tell us a little about yourself:
I recently got married (August 2008) to Dan, a mechanical engineer, who I've known since we were in high school. We have a 130 lbs. Bernese Mountain Dog named Bosley, who we adopted from a rescue group when he was 1-1/2. He loves any fuzzy toy that squeaks, and has a very quirky, but loving, personality. He keeps us on our toes. Both Dan and I love to do anything outside, especially traveling to new places, camping, snowboarding, etc. Someday, we’d really love to go to South Africa.
